Abbreviations I use in e-mail
In any sphere of activity, there are abbreviations and initialisations that will be understood by all. As a Web geek, things like AFAICT and IMO need little explanation. But, well, sometimes they do need expanding a little. So here's a guide to the abbreviations I (and others) commonly use in e-mail.
- +ve
- positive, as in “that's a very +ve comment…” (I can't recall using -ve but its meaning will be obvious)
- AFAICT
- as far as I can tell, as in, “AFAICT, no one had the idea before you…”
- AFAIK
- as far as I know, as in “AFAIK, she left the country but she may be back by now…”
- AIUI
- as I understand it, as in “AIUI, that's what that means, yes…”
- btw
- by the way, as in “btw that's really useful feedback…”
- HTH
- See below
- ICYMI
- in case you missed it, as in “ICYMI <link to something I think you'll find interesting>”
- JFDI
- Just f'in do it, as in “let's not get too hung up on the process and JFDI.”
- IMO
- in my opinion, as in “IMO this is a really good idea…”
- IMHO
- in my humble opinion - the more humble version of IMO
- IIRC
- if I recall correctly, as in “IIRC you first suggested that last week…”
- LGTM
- Looks good to me, as in “the thing you just sent me to review LGTM”
- POV
- point of view, as in, “from my POV, this is a really good idea…”
- tbh
- to be honest, as in, “I wish I'd thought of that tbh.”
- TL;DR
- Too Long; Didn't Read, as in “TL;DR I support your proposal” followed by a lengthy, tightly argued and well-referenced explanation of why I support your proposal. See also this definition.
- WDYT?
- what do you think?, as in, “WDYT of this proposal?”
- wrt
- with respect to, as in, “this makes a lot of sense wrt what we said last time…”
HTH- hope this helps - a common sign off from me
